The three states are not the same

Licensure is granted state by state, so what you can access genuinely differs depending on where you sit. Find your row, then open that state's page.

State Who sees you Ages In person? What that page covers
Pennsylvania Both providers 8+ (Zainab)
12+ (Abu)
Yes — York office The hybrid option, and why an office matters as federal rules shift
Maryland Both providers 8+ (Zainab)
12+ (Abu)
No — video only Cross-border care for the I-83 commuter belt; which state's rules apply
Virginia Abu Koroma only 12 and up No — video only Veteran-led care, TRICARE referral rules, VA healthcare coordination

Zainab Koroma is licensed in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Abu Koroma is licensed in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Abu can prescribe in PA, MD, and VA; Zainab can prescribe in PA and MD only. In Pennsylvania, prescribing is provided under a collaborative agreement. Neither can treat you in a state where they are not licensed, whatever your home address says.

What we offer

Most psychiatric care, delivered by video

Almost everything we do in person, we do by video — same providers, same protocols, same depth of evaluation.

Initial psychiatric evaluation

A 60-minute comprehensive intake covering history, current concerns, medications, family background, and goals — with a diagnosis and treatment plan by the end. More detail.

Medication management

Ongoing prescribing for SSRIs, SNRIs, mood stabilizers, ADHD medications and others, sent electronically to your pharmacy. More detail.

Follow-up & supportive care

30-minute follow-up visits include psychotherapy and supportive care when clinically appropriate. There is no separate therapy bill; when specialized therapy is needed, we refer to the right clinician.

Care coordination

With your authorization we communicate with your therapist, primary care provider, or other specialists so your care doesn't fragment across offices that never speak.

How it works

From "I should book" to a real visit

Five steps. Most new patients are seen within a week.

1

Book online or by phone

Book through the SimplePractice portal at any hour, or call (717) 202-2285 during office hours. Most plans need no referral. We accept all major insurances. Call today to confirm your insurance. (717) 202-2285. See the new patient guide.

2

Complete intake & consent

Intake forms and an Informed Consent for Telehealth Services arrive through the patient portal before your first visit. The consent confirms you understand the format, the privacy protections, and the limits. About 15 minutes.

3

Get your secure video link

A secure link arrives by email before each visit. No app to download — it works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge on a phone, tablet, or computer. The link is single-use and expires afterward.

4

Attend your visit

Join a few minutes early to test audio and video. Your provider confirms your physical location before the clinical portion begins — a licensing requirement, not a formality. From there it runs like any appointment: discussion, assessment, plan.

5

Prescriptions & follow-up

Prescriptions go electronically to the pharmacy you choose. Most antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and non-stimulant medications are routine by video. Controlled substances follow federal and state rules that differ by state — your state's page covers what applies.

Practical details

What you need (and what to know)

Technology needed

What you'll need on your end

  • A device with a working camera and microphone — phone, tablet, or computer
  • A stable internet connection, Wi-Fi or cellular
  • A private space where you can speak freely
  • A supported browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge
  • About five minutes beforehand to test audio and video
  • Headphones, which help more than people expect
When in-person is better

Telemedicine isn't right for everything

  • Acute mental health crises — call or text 988, or call 911
  • Some controlled substance evaluations, depending on federal rules
  • Anything needing a physical exam or vital signs
  • When your provider judges an in-person assessment clinically necessary
  • If your home isn't private or safe enough for an honest conversation
  • In Pennsylvania, our York office covers these. In MD and VA we would refer.

Telemedicine coverage — open any plan

Carrier availability is state-specific. Kaiser Permanente operates in Maryland and Virginia but not Pennsylvania; Geisinger is a Pennsylvania plan. Even the Blue Cross Blue Shield company changes at each border — Highmark in central PA, CareFirst in Maryland, Anthem in Virginia. Your state's page lists what applies where you are. We accept all major insurances. Call today to confirm your insurance. (717) 202-2285.

Frequently asked

Questions about telemedicine itself

State-specific questions — licensing, prescribing, insurance, ages — are answered on the Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia pages.

Is telemedicine psychiatry as effective as in-person care?

For most outpatient psychiatric care, yes. Peer-reviewed research and clinical guidance from the American Psychiatric Association have found comparable outcomes to in-person care for depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and medication management. Access frequently improves too — shorter waits, no travel, better attendance.

Some situations remain better in person: acute crises, certain controlled substance evaluations, and anything requiring a physical exam. We will tell you plainly if yours is one of them rather than proceed anyway.

Which of the three state pages should I be reading?

Whichever state you will physically be in during your appointments — not where you live, if those differ. Pennsylvania if you want the option of in-person visits at our York office. Maryland if you are in the Baltimore, Carroll, or Harford County area, especially if you commute across the line. Virginia if you are there, and particularly if you are a veteran or service member.

If you split time between two of them, read both — and mention it when you call, because it usually works out fine.

What happens to my care if I move between these three states?

Usually nothing. Abu Koroma is licensed in all three, so a move within Pennsylvania, Maryland, or Virginia does not require finding a new prescriber. Zainab Koroma is licensed in Pennsylvania and Maryland, so a move to Virginia would mean transferring to Abu — same practice, same records, different clinician.

A move outside all three does mean finding a local provider. We will transfer records and help you land somewhere rather than leave you to start cold. This comes up often enough for military families that our Virginia page addresses it directly.

Will I see the same provider every time?

Yes. This is a two-provider practice, not a platform with a rotating panel — you are matched to one clinician and you keep them. That continuity is most of the point.

Which of the two depends on your state and age: Abu Koroma covers all three states from age 12, and Zainab Koroma covers Pennsylvania and Maryland from age 8. The comparison table above lays it out.

What if my video drops in the middle of a visit?

Your provider calls you on the number on file and you finish by phone. Phone visits count the same clinically and bill the same way with most plans, so a bad connection does not cost you the appointment.

If we genuinely cannot connect at all, we reschedule with no cancellation fee. It happens; it is not a problem.

Do I have to install anything?

No. Visits run on SimplePractice's HIPAA-compliant browser-based platform. A secure link arrives by email before each appointment and you click it — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge, on any phone, tablet, or computer.

The link is single-use and expires after the visit, so it cannot be forwarded or reused.

How private is a video visit, really?

Our side is solid: encrypted video, HIPAA-compliant infrastructure, and no recording of visits. Legally and technically it carries the same protection as sitting in an office.

Your side is the variable, and it is worth being honest about. Join from a room where you can speak freely, use headphones, and lock your device if you step away. We cannot control whether someone in your household is within earshot — that part is yours to manage, and it is worth thinking about before the first visit rather than during it.

What if I'm in crisis right now?

This is not an emergency or crisis service. We do not provide after-hours care, crisis response, or real-time intervention, and it would be wrong to let anyone believe otherwise.

If you are in crisis: call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free and available 24/7. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department if you are in immediate danger. Veterans: call 988 and press 1. In York and Adams Counties the local crisis line is (717) 851-5320. Once you are safe, we can help with what comes next.

Care that travels with you.

Book if you're located in Pennsylvania, Maryland, or Virginia. New patient appointments are typically available within a week.
