Our approach

Why mental and physical health care belong together

In most healthcare systems, your mind and your body are treated as separate problems by separate departments. We don't do that. Here's why.

Mental health, the way it should work

  • Longer visits than the typical 15-minute slot. First evaluations are 60 minutes. Follow-ups are 30 minutes — long enough to actually talk.
  • The same provider every time — continuity is how trust gets built and how care actually works.
  • Evidence-based therapy within the same visit as thoughtful medication management. CBT-based and trauma-informed approaches, with no separate therapy bill.
  • No judgment, no performance. Whatever brought you here, we've heard it before.

Primary care & mental health, together

  • Anxiety from a thyroid. Depression from chronic pain. Both halves of the conversation happen in the same room.
  • One provider knows your whole history — mental, physical, medications, lab work — instead of three providers each holding a fragment.
  • Coordinated medication management. Psychiatric meds, primary care meds, and supplements all reviewed by the same prescribing clinician.
  • Less back-and-forth, fewer referrals. Most concerns can be addressed in one visit, not three.

Frequently asked

Common questions about mental health services in York, PA

What mental health services does Optimal Health York offer?

Optimal Health York offers 16 mental health and primary care services in York, PA. We treat anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD and trauma, bipolar disorder, sleep disorders, stress and burnout, and substance use. We provide specialty care for veterans, first responders, men's mental health, and children and adolescents. Our four core services are primary care, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and psychotherapy — with therapy begun within the same visit as your medication care. Care is available in person at our York office or via telehealth across PA, MD, and VA.

Do you provide both mental health care and primary care in York?

Yes. Zainab Koroma is dual-board-certified as both a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and a family nurse practitioner (FNP-C), which means she can treat your mental health and your physical health in the same visit. This is unusual — most clinicians are certified in one specialty or the other. Learn more about Zainab.

What ages do you treat?

We treat patients ages 8 and up. Zainab Koroma sees patients ages 8 and older for both psychiatric and primary care, in person at York or via PA/MD telehealth. Abu Koroma sees patients ages 12 and older via telehealth in PA, MD, and VA. We do not currently provide care for children under 8.

Do you offer telehealth mental health services?

Yes. Telehealth visits are available across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia via secure HIPAA-compliant video. You must be physically located in one of these states at the time of your visit. Telehealth is a strong fit if you live too far from York for in-person care, prefer the privacy of being seen at home, or want a faster appointment.

How much does a first psychiatric visit cost?

Self-pay rates are $249 for an initial psychiatric evaluation (60 minutes) and $99 for medication management follow-ups (30 minutes). Psychotherapy begun within your visit is not billed separately. With insurance, most patients pay only their plan's specialist copay. We accept all major insurances. Call today to confirm your insurance. (717) 202-2285.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

In most cases, no referral is required. You can book directly without going through your primary care provider first. A handful of insurance plans (mostly HMO products) require a PCP referral before they'll cover specialist mental health care — we'll check this for you when you call. Self-pay patients never need a referral.

Can you prescribe ADHD medications including stimulants?

Yes. Both providers are board-certified PMHNPs who prescribe in the states where they're licensed — Abu in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia; Zainab in Pennsylvania and Maryland. In Pennsylvania, nurse practitioners prescribe under a collaborative agreement with a physician. Controlled substances, including ADHD stimulants, are prescribed where state and federal law permit. ADHD evaluation typically begins with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes. Learn about ADHD care.

What's the difference between a psychiatric NP and a psychiatrist?

A psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with a master's or doctoral degree in psychiatric mental health nursing. PMHNPs diagnose, prescribe medication, and provide psychotherapy — the same core functions as a psychiatrist in most outpatient settings. Psychiatrists complete medical school plus a 4-year residency; PMHNPs are registered nurses who complete graduate PMHNP training and pass a national board certification exam. For most outpatient mental health care, the two provide comparable treatment, and PMHNPs typically have shorter wait times. Both providers at Optimal Health York are board-certified PMHNPs.
